Breathing deeply is so important to our well being. This is true for caregivers and kids alike! Breathing deeply calms our nervous system, assures us of safety, and prepares our brains for learning and problem-solving. So model belly breathing in front of your children during moments of upset, and coach them to do the same. Try watching this fun Sesame Street video together. Let Elmo, Common, and Colbie Caillat teach you how to breathe deeply together! Your belly should expand when you breathe in - that's how you know you're breathing the right way. You can also try lying down with your children on the floor, putting a plush animal on your bellies, and making sure the animals rise and fall with each breath.
