Back to School time is busy and it can be really stressful. Parents feel stressed because of many to-do items and dates on our calendars. Children feel stressed because they are experiencing a major transition in their daily routines. They may also be meeting new teachers and students. So how can we support our kids? Here are a few tips.
Slow Down. Say no to too many commitments. This might mean politely declining a birthday party invitation or keeping after-school sports and activities to a minimum. Try not to over schedule yourself or your child. Be present. Take the time to listen to your child, and take the time to play. Remember that children may not be able to verbalize that they have been feeling stress, but moments of play and moments of connection will naturally reduce stress for both parent and child. Ask questions about your child's day. Ask open-ended questions, like "What was the funnest part of your day?" or "Who did you play with during recess?" or "Tell me a new song you learned". This may spark deeper conversation than simply asking "Did you have a good day today?" Acknowledge and validate any feelings they share with you. Keep them healthy. This means getting plenty of sleep, nutrition, and exercise. Very young children may need 10 or more hours of sleep daily. Stick to routines. Develop a dinner routine and a bedtime routine that work for your family, and then stick with them most of the time. Develop a homework or reading routine if your child is old enough. Routines help reduce anxiety because children know what to expect, and they can help the whole family to have a less stressful evening. Reduce screen time, noise, and distractions. Allow for quiet time and screen-free play time. Get outside. Get fresh air, exercise, and a calming dose of nature! Try adding I Love You rituals to your day. If you notice there is a particularly stressful time of the day, such as coming home after school, try adding a calming, connecting experience, such as a Conscious Discipline I Love You ritual, to that time of the day.

School will be starting tomorrow, and we are all looking forward to seeing our students again. Our theme for the year is "Under the Sea", so parents and students will notice many sea-themed decorations and activities throughout the year. We welcome ALL students and ALL families, and we are looking forward to connecting, playing, learning, and growing along with all of you!
