Throughout our community, many students are returning to school. This can be a scary or difficult time for children and parents alike, especially in the context of our pandemic world. Children haven't been to school in a long time, and may feel fearful or worried about becoming sick, wearing masks, seeing people in masks, or separating from their families. As always, we should spend time with our children, play with them, talk with them, and reassure them when they feel worried. One more thing we can do to ease our children's fears is to help them understand what they may see when they return to school. Check out this awesome social story, shared with permission from Autism Little Learners, that shows children what they may see when they return to school. You can click on the link to print the social story, or feel free to reach out to me if you would like a copy to be sent home for your child. We wish you well during this unprecedented back to school season, and we are all here for you! Going Back To School

As usual, the summer has flown by, and here we are beginning a new school year! This school year may be different than any we have experienced, and there may be difficult moments as well as joyful moments. I ask for all of you (and for myself too!) to remember a couple of things. First, we are all in this together. This is a situation out of our control. We must accept the moment as it is, support each other in any way possible, and try to make the best of everything. Second, remember to breathe deeply and care for ourselves as well as others! Deep breathing calms our nervous systems and can help us cope, make good decisions, respond rather than react, and see the best in others. I wish you all well as we begin our school year! As always, please feel free to call me at 816-316-5461 or email me at [email protected]. Check out my video and photos! |
