Did you know that too much screen time can actually alter your child's brain development? Not only that, screen time often takes the place of other activities - like talking, socially connecting with others, and pretending - that are so important to early development. We live in an age of technology in which children have access to more technology than ever before, and some of the negative effects are still unknown. But we do know that screen time should be limited, and that other activities, such as exercise, play, reading, and real-world experiences should take up most of your child's time. Here are some guidelines to help, with special thanks to Cari Ebert, who shared this information with me!
- Be thoughtful about how you use screen time with young children. It should never be a 'babysitter' for your child. Try to engage in media together, and choose quality over quantity when watching TV or movies. - Create regular tech-free time, such as during car rides or meals. Schedule tech-free outings too! You don't need to have technology with you every time you go to the playground. - Make sure your child has a balanced day, with plenty of time for tech-free play, exercise, reading, and face-to-face interaction. And make sure your child plays outside! Even rainy or cool days can be fun, new sensory experiences! - Turn off the TV when no one is watching, and when a show has ended. - Children learn through face-to-face interaction. Make sure your child has limited screen time, but make sure that your own screen time is limited as well. When a parent and child both disconnect from technology, they have the opportunity to get down on the floor and play together. This is where real learning occurs for young children.
